GreenFlame Basket – Firepit Insert
Firepit Insert for Sustainable Campfire Use
The GreenFlame Basket retrofits traditional campground fire rings to burn clean, locally sourced biomass fuels—wood pellets, corn stove pellets, and switchgrass—delivering authentic campfire warmth while helping stop the spread of invasive tree killing bugs.
The GreenFlame Basket – Firepit Insert for Sustainable Campfire Use
The GreenFlame Basket is an innovative firepit insert designed to retrofit traditional campground fire rings for the clean, efficient use of wood pellets, corn stove pellets, and switchgrass fuel. Its purpose is to provide campers with a safe and sustainable alternative to conventional firewood while directly supporting efforts to prevent the spread of invasive forest pests such as the emerald ash borer and spotted lanternfly.
By replacing firewood with locally sourced biomass fuels, the GreenFlame Basket eliminates the risk of transporting infested logs across counties or state lines. This product aligns with and reinforces the principles of the “Don’t Move Firewood – Buy It Where You Burn It” campaign promoted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Constructed from durable, high-temperature steel, the GreenFlame Basket fits securely into existing fire rings and delivers a controlled, consistent burn with 80% less smoke and ash than traditional wood fires. It allows campers to enjoy the same warmth and ambiance of a campfire while contributing to forest health and air quality.
By adopting the GreenFlame Basket, campgrounds can modernize their facilities, reduce environmental impact, and lead by example in protecting local forests and wildlife—ensuring that campfires remain a cherished tradition without spreading destructive pests.

Mission Statement – The GreenFlame Basket Initiative
Our mission is to protect our forests, educate our communities, and preserve the tradition of campfires through innovation and sustainability.
The GreenFlame Basket program promotes the use of clean, locally sourced biomass fuels—such as wood pellets, corn stove pellets, and switchgrass—in place of transported firewood at campsites and public parks. By adapting existing campground fire rings with The GreenFlame Basket insert, we provide campers with a safe, smoke-reduced, and environmentally responsible way to enjoy the warmth and connection of a real campfire.
This initiative supports and extends the message of “Don’t Move Firewood – Buy It Where You Burn It,” helping to stop the spread of invasive species that threaten New York’s forests and beyond. Through outreach, partnerships, and public education, we aim to transform the way people experience outdoor fires—shifting from practices that harm ecosystems to those that protect them.
Our nonprofit’s vision is simple: To create a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable outdoor experience where every fire burned supports local communities, reduces ecological risk, and safeguards the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley for generations to come.
We believe every campfire can be a force for good — when it burns local.
